NOAA Updates

The first modern clam garden in the United States is reviving a 3,500-year-old indigenous practice and providing subsistence and environmental resilience for the Swinomish tribal community. Watch this new video from NOAA Fisheries to learn more.

Explore a NOAA Career: Summer 2024 Paid Internships in the Chesapeake Bay. NOAA summer interns work with our experts for roughly 12 weeks during the summer. They contribute to NOAA’s mission, gain valuable experience, boost their resumes, and try out a potential science career. Applications are due January 28, 2024.

Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo announced the allocation of $8.2 million in funds for the Yurok Tribe impacted by salmon fishery disasters in 2021 and 2022. Learn more about the allocation here.

Save the Date! March 22-23, 2024: The Wisconsin and Minnesota Aquaculture Conference will be in Red Cliff, Wisconsin.

February 26-29, 2024: Alaska Sea Grant will host the Mariculture Conference of Alaska in Anchorage, Alaska.

Respond by January 15: The U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service announced that starting Dec. 18 they will mail the 2023 Census of Aquaculture to all producers who indicated in their 2022 Census of Agriculture that they produce and sell aquaculture products.

Job and Funding Opportunities

• Apply by April 3: The application period is now open for Sea Grant’s 2024 National Aquaculture Initiative: Enhancing Production of Coastal, Marine, and Great Lakes Aquaculture Species. This opportunity is open to: any individual; any public or private corporation, partnership, or other association or entity; or any State, political subdivision of a State, Tribal government or agency or officer thereof.

• Deadline extended to January 5: Santa Monica College is hiring a Project Manager, Biotech & Aquaculture.

• Apply by January 6: University of Georgia Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant have an opening for a Seafood Extension Specialist that will be based on the coast.

• Kelsey Meyer, a 2022-23 New Hampshire Sea Grant Graduate Fellow, is a third-year marine biology Ph.D. student at UNH and coordinator of the NH Shellfish Farmers Initiative. • A new article in the magazine Fisheries features an article by Michigan Sea Grant’s Lauren Jescovitch, together with co-authors Sharon Moen, Fatima Abldl-Haleem, and Titus Seilheimer, entitled “The Great Lakes Future Fishers Initiative: Supporting the Next Generation of Great Lakes Commercial Fishing and Seafood Processing Industries.”
• In fiscal year 2023, Sea Grant invested $14 million in federal funding to support several new initiatives. Learn about the initiatives and resources that they are developing in this 2023 summary from Sea Grant.
