Annual estimate of North Atlantic right whale population numbers released

NOAA has released its annual estimate of North Atlantic right whale population numbers (PDF, 18 p). There were approximately 360 animals alive at the beginning of 2022. This is fewer than the numbers alive at the beginning of 2021, but the sharp downward trajectory of this species observed between 2015 and 2019 may be slowing. It is too early to know whether this slow-down signals that recovery of the population has started.

The annual population estimate is derived in collaboration with the North Atlantic Right Whale Consortium using documented models developed by NOAA and the Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life at New England Aquarium. The population estimate will be further reviewed in 2024 by the Atlantic Scientific Review Group.

NOAA Fisheries and our partners are dedicated to conserving and rebuilding the endangered North Atlantic right whale population. The North Atlantic Right Whale Road to Recovery describes NOAA Fisheries’ efforts to halt the current population decline and recover the species.
