Where rivers meet the sea, NOAA is working to restore and protect delicate estuarine environments.

National Estuaries Week takes place each September—this year, from September 16 to 23. It’s a chance to highlight the importance of some of the most productive ecosystems in the world.

NOAA’s Damage Assessment, Remediation, and Restoration Program and Deepwater Horizon program work to protect, restore, and maintain habitat after oil spills and toxic waste releases.

Restoring Coastal Communities After Pollution

For over 30 years, NOAA and partners have recovered over $10.6 billion to restore fish, wildlife, and habitats harmed by pollution. Restoration also provides economic and cultural benefits to coastal populations, including underserved and indigenous communities.
