NOAA Fisheries Makes Changes to Cod and Haddock Recreational Regulations for Fishing Year 2023

Effective August 14, 2023

Today, NOAA Fisheries is issuing a final rule that includes recreational regulation changes for Georges Bank cod, and Gulf of Maine cod and haddock for the 2023 fishing year.

After consultation with the New England Fishery  Management Council, NOAA Fisheries is implementing changes to Gulf of Maine and Georges Bank cod as recommended by the Council. For Gulf of Maine haddock, we are making changes to catch lengths and limits for for-hire and private recreational fishers to appropriately constrain catch and dead discards. Compared to the Council-recommended measures, our measures aim to increase harvest and reduce dead discards of haddock.

NOAA Fisheries projects that current measures for Gulf of Maine cod can be liberalized somewhat, while measures for Georges Bank cod and Gulf of Maine haddock must be tightened to ensure overfishing is not occurring.

More information on the new 2023 recreational measures can be found in the final rule or in our bulletin. Measures in the rule are effective August 14, 2023.
