NOAA Fisheries has issued The John H. Prescott Marine Mammal Rescue Assistance Grant Program Report FY 2016–2020. It is now available on our website.
Prescott grants support a core mission of NOAA Fisheries, the conservation and recovery of protected marine species, by helping improve our national marine mammal stranding and entanglement response capabilities. In the first 20 years of the Prescott Grant Program, Congress has appropriated up to $4 million annually.
From Fiscal Year 2016–2020, the focus of this report, the Prescott Grant Program awarded more than $16 million in funding through 187 competitive grants to 61 separate organizations in 24 states and to two tribes. For the Greater Atlantic Region this includes 51 awards and 15 organizations (total $3,931,111)
Additionally, the Prescott Grant Program provided $418,316 in funds to help reimburse the Network in eight awards for unforeseen or emergency events that required extra support such as mass strandings, out-of-habitat animals, and natural disasters.
This program has helped build a strong network of over 100 trained, professional partner organizations. These trained professionals and volunteers provide valuable marine mammal data as they respond to marine mammals in distress, helping NOAA Fisheries establish links among the health of marine mammals, coastal ecosystems, and coastal communities.
