Reminder: Georges Bank Cod Recreational Measures in Southern New England and the Mid-Atlantic

Framework Adjustment 63 to the Northeast Multispecies Fishery Management Plan became effective July 15, 2022. It adjusted the recreational measures for Georges Bank cod.

Recreational Measures for Georges Bank Cod

Minimum Size

22 inches

Maximum Size

28 inches

Possession Limit

5 fish per person per day

Closed Season

May 1 through July 31

Open Season

August 1 through April 30

These measures apply to: 

  • Private recreational fishing vessels in federal waters (3-200 miles from shore)
  • Federal charter/party permitted vessels in all waters
  • Federal Northeast multispecies permitted vessels fishing under the charter/party or recreational regulations (i.e., not commercial fishing) in all waters

Georges Bank cod are those cod caught outside the Gulf of Maine regulated mesh area (RMA), and therefore include cod caught in the Georges Bank RMA, Southern New England RMA, and Mid-Atlantic RMA. This includes waters offshore of Massachusetts (south of Cape Cod), Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey.

Federal and State Regulations

State recreational fishing regulations may differ from the federal regulations. Please consult with your state to determine its regulations. When federal and state regulations both apply, vessels are bound by the most restrictive requirements.
