New York Beachwalkers: Please Report Cold-Stunned Sea Turtles

turtle on beach

The recent cold snap marks the beginning of the cold-stunned sea turtle season in the northeast. Cold and immobile sea turtles are now washing up on area beaches, particularly on the sound side of Long Island.

If you see a sea turtle on the beach, please call it in!

  • New York Stranding Hotline: 631-369-9829
  • NOAA Hotline: 866-755-NOAA (6622)

If the turtle is below the high tide line, move it gently above the line and cover it lightly with seaweed. These turtles need special care, and our trained responders from New York Marine Rescue Center and Atlantic Marine Conservation Society are ready to help.

Please keep pets away from these turtles, as they are in a severely distressed state.

Thank you for helping save these endangered sea turtles.
