2020 FIS Funded Projects Announced
Since FY 2013, the Fisheries Information Program has utilized a competitive request for proposals process to provide support for projects to improve fisheries-dependent data management, electronic technologies, and quality improvement among NOAA's regional offices, FINs, and state partners. In collaboration with Electronic Technologies and the National Catch Share Program, we have selected 28 projects for funding as part of our FY 2020 proposal process.
Through the RFP process, FIS, ET, and CSP support projects in five areas:
- Data Improvements, Integration, and Modernization -- 6 projects selected.
- Electronic Reporting (ER) -- 11 projects selected.
- Electronic Monitoring (EM) -- 5 projects selected.
- Fishery Information Network (FIN) Development -- 4 projects selected.
- Quality Management and Continuous Improvement (QM & CI) -- 2 projects selected.
Learn more about our funded projects from FY 2020 and previous years on the FIS website, and look for guidance on the FY 2021 RFP process in the spring.

Providing Solutions to Real-World Challenges
Strategic Planning for Continued Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill Restoration
NOAA is one of the agencies charged with managing the $8.1 billion settlement to restore the ecological impacts of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. When the team leading Deepwater Horizon restoration efforts out of NOAA Fisheries decided to develop a program-level strategic plan, they turned to the Fisheries Information System Program’s Quality Management and Continuous Improvement Professional Specialty Group. To learn more about how members of the QM/CI PSG worked with NOAA Fisheries colleagues on the plan, check out the full story online.

FIS Program Mission
We work collaboratively through partnerships to improve access to comprehensive, high-quality, timely fisheries information by investing in three broad areas: data gaps and data quality; efficient technology and data integration; and effective coordination and communication in the design, collection, and uses of data.
