What NIST MEP is Reading
Manufacturing The Future: The Next Era Of Global Growth And Innovation.McKinsey Global Institute. McKinsey Operations Practice. November 2012.
Presentation at the Brookings Institute: Global Manufacturing: Entering A New Era November 19, 2012
This timely report byMcKinsey & Company refutes many assumptions regarding the decline of American manufacturing. In fact, the report paints a picture of prosperity for U.S. manufacturers if they capitalize on advanced manufacturing techniques and systems that will allow them to continue to provide goods and services across the globe in a cost-effective manner. As expected, the conversation at the Brookings Institute repeatedly returned to issues of a skilled workforce and the necessity of public/private investment in manufacturing writ large. James Griffith, President and CEO of the Timken Company spoke to the issue of competitiveness, including the ability to be proximate to customers when needed, to use technology to manage manufacturing processes, including design and delivery, and the importance of talent management.
