The 2026 Weights and Measures Week theme, “We Measure What Matters,” reminds us that measurement isn’t just for rulers, provers, or scales – it's at the heart of trust in the U.S. marketplace. This year’s holiday coincided with NIST’s 125th anniversary celebration – both wonderful reasons to enjoy cake! The Office of Weights and Measures (OWM) hosted visiting laboratory metrology training participants, their dedicated instructors, and amazing staff who keep OWM’s gears turning. It was a wonderful moment to applaud the U.S. weights and measures community and the impact of NIST.

Advance Your Career with OWM Metrology and Weights and Measures Training
A primary benefit of the Office of Weights and Measures (OWM) Training Program professional development is increased confidence in technical decisions. Participants gain applied skills that support day-to-day responsibilities while building connections with peers and national experts that strengthen collaboration across the weights and measures community.
OWM’s online training catalog Is Live! To help organizations and individuals identify professional development opportunities, the OWM has developed an online Course Catalog. Courses are designed to support career growth with applied instruction in laboratory metrology, field weights and measures, and International System of Units (SI) K-12 Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education.

Announcing the 2026 OWM "Info Hours" Series
The NIST Office of Weights and Measures is pleased to announce the schedule for the 2026 OWM Info Hours series. An Info Hour is a one-hour session that features current weights and measures, legal metrology, or documentary standard relevant topic while providing a forum for discussion and Q&A. It allows for networking with OWM staff and other subject matter experts (SMEs) in the weights and measures community.
Info Hours are scheduled for the third Thursday of most months in 2026, at 2:00 PM Eastern Time. There is no registration fee or prerequisites required for attendance. All Info Hours will be recorded, uploaded to the e-Learning Resources and Training webpage, and available on demand.
Consensus Value 2026 for the Kilogram
A new 2026 Consensus Value (CV) for the kilogram has been released by the BIPM for the international mass metrology community. Where Design Meets Science: My NIST PREP Internship
My name is Yoon Thwel, and I am a Communication and Graphic Design student at Montgomery College, Gaithersburg, Maryland. In spring 2025, I had an amazing opportunity to join the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) as a Professional Research Experience Program (PREP) intern. I worked under Office of Weights and Measures (OWM), Metric Program, which plays a vital role in helping K–12 students and educators understand and use the metric system.
