Have you ever had a smoke alarm go off while you’re cooking? Nuisance alarms are more than just annoying. They can be dangerous if they cause people to deactivate their alarms. Learn about the latest NIST research on smoke alarms in our new video on YouTube.

For Good Measure

Unlike NASA, the FBI and the Social Security Administration, NIST’s mission is not easy to explain in a nutshell. So we were very grateful to NIST’s chief metrologist, Jim Olthoff, for marvelously encapsulating so much of what NIST does in his recent blog post, Keepers of the Right Answer: Why Measurements at NIST Are Important for the Nation and the World. I highly recommend it if you’d like to get a big-picture view of NIST. And if you work at NIST, it’s a great piece to which you can point your friends and relatives who want to know more about what we do. If you would like to see other big-picture descriptions of NIST’s work, check out Why You Need Standards, Measurements Matter and Busting Myths About the Metric System.
