NIST engineer Kumar Arumugam examines the tabletop Kibble balance before its delivery to the U.S. Army.

NIST Brings Mass Measurement to the Masses

NIST has delivered a portable and highly accurate instrument called a tabletop Kibble balance, used for measuring mass, to the U.S. Army. The device could potentially revolutionize critical measurements in a variety of applications, from weighing aircraft components to delivering exact doses of medicine. This marks the first time in the U.S. that this technology is available outside of NIST.

Even Better Atomic Clock

New atomic clock is more precise and accurate than any clock previously created. For the first time, the clock can detect the effects of gravity predicted by the theory of general relativity at the microscopic scale. Read More

Kibble Balance Meets Sphere

Scientists have measured a silicon sphere, used to define Germany’s kilogram, with the Kibble balance, which NIST uses to define the U.S.’s kilogram. Scientists are exploring why the two approaches yield different results. Read More

Cesium Clocks See Solar Storm

Did you see the northern lights recently? The geomagnetic storm was so intense that NIST’s cesium fountain clocks directly sensed the variation of 0.1% in Earth’s magnetic field. Read More
