In Search of the Perfect Mirror at Mid-Infrared Wavelengths

Perfect mirror: A gloved hand holds a circular dish with a gridlike pattern of smaller black circles inside.

An international team of researchers, including two from NIST, has demonstrated the first true supermirrors in the mid-infrared spectral region. These mirrors are key for many applications, including environmental sensing, precision laser cutting, and mixing ultra-pure gases for semiconductor manufacturing.
