Happy Spring from the Office of Weights and Measures! OWM is pleased to showcase a number of new initiatives, resources, and personnel updates in this issue of Measurement Matters, featuring our newly updated newsletter design. We have much to be excited about with new developments to the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program, return to in-person training, new education resources, and welcoming new staff members. We have also begun the process of re-designing our website and recently published a brief history of OWM. All this and more in this issue of Measurement Matters! |
T: National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Formula Program
Up to $7.5 billion is currently being invested in the U.S. Electric Vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. This is made possible through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), enacted as the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), Public Law 117 58 signed into law November 15, 2021. The BIL is administered by the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation and will establish a national network to accelerate adoption of EVs, reduce transportation-related greenhouse gas emissions, and position U.S. industries for global leadership in electrification efforts.

We're Back... OWM Welcomes Laboratory Metrology Students to Campus!
NIST OWM resumed limited in-person laboratory metrology training at the Gaithersburg campus starting on January 31, 2022. NIST hosted a total of 14 students over four seminar classes that were held from late January to March 2022. We look forward to welcoming additional students in the near future.

A Brief History of OWM
OWM is proud to recognize over 185 years of legal metrology standards and services to the U.S. weights and measures community and to promote the international harmonization of equitable standards that facilitate both U.S. economic growth and global trade. The first Office of Weights and Measures was established in 1836 in the Coast and Geodetic Survey of the U.S. Department of the Treasury and was originally formed to define the units of measure to be used in the construction of standards and balances provided to the States.

OWM Launches New Metrology Training Needs Survey
Our pre-pandemic OWM training program was mainly designed for in-person training, either in the field or at NIST in our metrology training laboratories. During the pandemic, OWM was able to quickly develop and deliver online training events to over 3,000 individuals. As we now are returning to our campus, we need to assess how we can embrace hybrid learning opportunities and evaluate how OWM can best develop future training for the weights and measures community. Thus, OWM has created a Training Need Assessment Survey to help identify and leverage our strengths, while discovering any needed areas for improvement and new opportunities. Click here to take the survey now.
Celebrate World Metrology Day
“World Metrology Day is an annual celebration of the signature of the Meter Convention on 20 May 1875 by representatives of seventeen nations. The Convention set the framework for global collaboration in the science of measurement and in its industrial, commercial and societal applications. The original aim of the Meter Convention - the world-wide uniformity of measurement - remains as important today as it was in 1875.”
