NIST Extends Deadline for Information to Help Develop an AI Risk Management Framework
As a key step in its effort to manage the risks posed by artificial intelligence (AI), the U.S. Department of Commerce's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is requesting input from the public that will inform the development of AI risk management guidance.
The notice of a deadline extension to Sept. 15, 2021, for responses to the Request for Information (RFI) is expected to be published in the Federal Register on August 24. The information received will help NIST draft an Artificial Intelligence Risk Management Framework (AI RMF), a guidance document for voluntary use intended to help technology developers, users and evaluators improve the trustworthiness of AI systems. Development of the AI RMF will answer a direction from Congress for NIST, and it also forms part of NIST’s response to the Executive Order on Maintaining American Leadership in AI.
The framework is being developed through a consensus-driven, open, transparent, and collaborative process that will include workshops and other opportunities to provide input. The first workshop will be held (virtually) from Oct. 19-21, 2021. Information on the workshop will soon be available when details are finalized.
