FY21 Continuing Resolution

On Friday, December 11th, the President signed H.R. 8900 - Further Continuing Appropriations Act, 2021, and Other Extensions Act, which provides continuing FY2021 appropriations to federal agencies through December 18, 2020, and extends several expiring health programs.

Update on FY21 Appropriations

On November 10th, the Senate Commerce, Justice, Science Appropriations Subcommittee released their FY21 spending bill that includes proposed funding levels for NIST.  The House introduced their version, H.R. 7667 on July 16th.  The table below shows the comparison and final numbers will be negotiated in a final spending package.

Congress passes Internet of Things (IoT) Cybersecurity Legislation

On Friday, December 4th, the President signed the Internet of Things (IoT) Cybersecurity Improvement Act of 2020 (P.L. 116-207) into law.  The bill would require NIST and the Office of Management and Budget to issue guidance and standards to manage and report security vulnerabilities for IoT devices used by the federal government.

Return on Investment Legislative Proposals Transmitted to Congressional Committees

In April 2019, NIST announced the release of a Final Green Paper from its Return on Investment (ROI) Initiative for Unleashing American Innovation. The NIST ROI Green Paper provided a summary of private and public stakeholder inputs received from hundreds of experts and organizations representing thousands of companies, universities, federal laboratories and other institutions.

NIST is pleased to share that the ROI Legislative Package for modernizing the Stevenson-Wydler Act has now been released to Congress for consideration.

Apply Now for the 2021 Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Program

The SURF Program sponsors an 11-week summer internship program for undergraduate students enrolled at U.S. 2-year and 4-year institutions majoring in chemistry, computer science, engineering, materials science, fire research, nanotechnology, information technology, mathematics, biology, manufacturing, statistics, or other STEM discipline. The program provides students with hands-on research experience under the mentorship of a NIST scientist or engineer in Boulder, CO or Gaithersburg, MD.

The SURF Program will be virtual in 2021, but you can apply now for opportunities in Boulder or Gaithersburg

The announcement closes on February 14, 2021.

Baldrige Award Winners Announced

The Department of Commerce announced this year’s Baldrige award winners including the first three-time winner and the first two-time winner in the nonprofit category.  The five winners include:

The 2020 Baldrige Award and past year awardees will showcase their best practices during the 32nd Quest for Excellence® Conference, which will be held virtually April 12-15, 2021.
