What you'll find in this issue of Discover NIMH:
Mental health is as important as physical health, and creating a safe and supportive environment for everyone to thrive is vital. Each May, the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) supports the national movement to raise and promote awareness about mental health.
Educating ourselves and others on the realities of mental health challenges can break down the stigma and create a more supportive environment for those who need it.
We hope you'll join us and use these resources—this month and every month of the year—to help spread the word about mental health.
In recognition of National Mental Health Awareness Month in May, NIMH is hosting a Facebook Live event on schizophrenia on May 4 from 1:00–1:30 p.m. ET.
No registration is required for this free event. Watch the live event on NIMH’s Facebook page.

May 11 is National Children's Mental Health Awareness Day. Mental health is an important part of overall health for children and adults. For a young person with symptoms of a mental disorder, the earlier treatment is started, the more effective it can be. Early treatment can help prevent more severe, lasting problems as a child grows up.

NIMH highlights women who are early-career scientists conducting NIMH-funded research that plays a role in advancing our mission of transforming the understanding and treatment of mental illnesses.
For Children's Mental Health Awareness Day, we're highlighting Kiara Alvarez, Ph.D., a licensed clinical psychologist and assistant professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Alvarez's NIMH-funded research focuses on youth suicide prevention, particularly on how families and communities can work together to reduce suicidal ideation and behavior among Latinx and immigrant youth.
