Reflecting on 2023 to Leverage Innovation to Advance Women’s Health and Research in 2024

2023 was a productive year at Team ORWH filled with notable successes. ORWH appointed new leadership, forged new partnerships, and realigned resources and people to address ongoing challenges facing women’s health and research. Before I share some of the highlights and milestones from 2023, I am delighted to announce ORWH will release a new strategic plan in 2024. The NIH-Wide Strategic Plan for Research on the Health of Women defines a vision for NIH for the next 5 years to advance women’s health research through a comprehensive, data-driven approach. New Funding Opportunity Supports Administrative Supplements for Research on the Health of U3 Women Populations

ORWH released the Notice of Special Interest (NOSI): Research on the Health of Women of Understudied, Underrepresented and Underreported (U3) Populations (Admin Supp Clinical Trial Optional). This NOSI will support supplemental research projects that explore intersectionality and social determinants of health impacts on women in the United States who are categorized as U3 in biomedical research.

ORWH Announces Science Policy Scholar Travel Award for a Junior Investigator to Present at the 2024 Annual Meeting of the Organization for the Study of Sex Differences

ORWH is offering a Science Policy Scholar Travel Award to support the development of one junior investigator who is focused on women’s health or sex and gender differences and is also interested in research policy. The travel award will provide $6,000 to support the junior investigator’s attendance at the Organization for the Study of Sex Differences (OSSD) Annual Meeting on May 6–9, 2024, in Bergen, Norway.

New Request for Information Released, Inviting Input on NIH-Wide Strategic Plan for Autoimmune Disease Research

The Office of Autoimmune Disease Research in the Office of Research on Women’s Health (OADR-ORWH) recently released the Request for Information (RFI): Inviting Input on an NIH-Wide Strategic Plan for Autoimmune Disease Research. The purpose of this RFI is to gather input from internal and external partners throughout the scientific research, advocacy, and clinical practice communities, including those employed by NIH and by institutions receiving NIH support, as well as the public, on four areas related to autoimmune disease research.

Applications are due by March 1, 2024, at 11:59 p.m. EST.

New Issue of In Focus Explores Autoimmune Diseases in Women

The latest issue of Women’s Health in Focus at NIH explores research on autoimmune diseases in women. The feature story describes seven autoimmune diseases that predominately affect women. A guest editorial by the first-ever OADR-ORWH Director Victoria Shanmugam, MBBS, MRCP, FACR, CCD, details the mission of the new office and efforts under way to improve women’s health. This issue also spotlights new leadership at NIH, including NIH Director Monica Bertagnolli, M.D., and ORWH Deputy Director Vivian Ota Wang, Ph.D., FACMG, CGC.

NIH Publishes Report on Research on Women’s Health for Fiscal Years 2021–2022

NIH recently published a full report on its fiscal years (FY) 2021 and 2022 research activities pertaining to the health of women. The Report of the Advisory Committee on Research on Women’s Health: Office of Research on Women's Health and NIH Support for Research on Women's Health, known as the Biennial Report, details the NIH-wide programs and accomplishments carried out to fulfill ORWH’s core mission. It also includes a summary of ORWH activities during FY 2021–2022.

Women's Health Research Day 

On January 25, we celebrated the establishment of Women's Health Research Day and the anniversary of the NIH Policy on Sex as a Biological Variable (SABV). Women’s Health Research Day was established in 2016 and it recognizes the need to increase awareness of sex- and gender-based biomedical research and the importance of inclusivity in women's health research. Spearheaded by ORWH, the landmark NIH SABV Policy took effect in 2016 and outlines NIH’s expectation that sex as a biological variable will be factored into research designs, analyses, and reporting in vertebrate animal and human studies as scientifically appropriate. Dr. Clayton recently discussed the current challenges and opportunities within women's health and how we can better integrate SABV across the U.S. research enterprise with Friends of ORWH.
