White House Establishes Women’s Health Research Initiative
Earlier this month, the White House announced the first-ever Women’s Health Research Initiative. This new effort will be led by First Lady Jill Biden and chaired by Dr. Carolyn Mazure, an esteemed leader in the field of women’s health research. The White House aims to spur innovation, unleash transformative investment to close research gaps, and improve women’s health. ORWH Director, Janine Austin Clayton, M.D., FARVO shared a statement in support of the initiative.

NIH ORWH and OAR Request for Information on Research Opportunities Related to HIV and Women’s Health
The NIH ORWH and Office of AIDS Research (OAR) launched a joint HIV and Women Signature Program in 2023 to advance the NIH vision for women’s health—a world in which all women, including cisgender, transgender, and gender-diverse women, receive evidence-based care, prevention, and treatment tailored to their unique needs, circumstances, and goals. To ensure accountability to the communities we serve, ORWH and OAR seek comments and input from women with lived experience of HIV, the advocacy and research communities, the general public, and others interested in research on HIV and women.

ORWH to Host the First In-Person Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women’s Health (BIRCWH) Annual Meeting Since 2019!
On December 5, 2023, ORWH will host the Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women’s Health (BIRCWH) Annual Meeting in-person, on NIH Main Campus from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. EDT. BIRCWH is an institutional mentored career-development program designed to connect junior faculty, known as BIRCWH Scholars, to senior faculty mentors with shared interest in women’s health and sex differences research. The BIRCWH Annual Meeting is a gathering of senior and junior faculty that provides an opportunity to network and share scientific advances.

SCORE Annual Meeting Recap
The Specialized Centers of Research Excellence (SCORE) on Sex Differences program hosted its annual meeting earlier this month to highlight the yearly achievements of and promote collaboration between the 11 centers within SCORE. Claire Pomeroy, M.D., M.B.A., presented the keynote address titled, “Core Values and Your Research Career: Health Equity and the Social Determinants of Health.”
