I am pleased to introduce Vivian Ota Wang, M.Phil., Ph.D., CGC as the new deputy director of the Office of Research on Women’s Health (ORWH). Dr. Ota Wang comes to ORWH from the Office of Data Sharing Strategy in the Division of Program Coordination, Planning, and Strategic Initiatives for the Office of the Director at NIH. She has a background in genomics, psychology, ethics, and data science, and her expertise will help to further drive innovative ideas and solutions to advance and improve the health of all women.

NIH and Gates Foundation Release Report to Improve Women’s Health Within the Next 15 Years
The 2023 Women’s Health Innovation Opportunity Map outlines bold and actionable steps to address critical priorities for advancing women’s health innovation, including 50 opportunities that are critical for catalyzing innovation to improve the health of women identified by the Innovation Equity Forum (IEF). The Opportunity Map is designed for researchers, entrepreneurs, investors, government bodies, biopharmaceutical companies, civil society, and others around the world who are championing health equity for their communities and beyond. The report, now available in the NIH Resource Library, was prepared by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and NIH, which co-hosted the IEF.

NIH Announces Grant Recipients of Galvanizing Health Equity Through Novel and Diverse Educational Resources (GENDER) R25
In partnership with the National Library of Medicine, National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, and Sexual & Gender Minority Research Office, ORWH is pleased to announce the five recipients of the new Galvanizing Health Equity Through Novel and Diverse Educational Resources (GENDER) Research Education Program (R25). Recipients include Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, University of California San Francisco, University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and University of Alabama at Birmingham.
GENDER R25 will support educational activities that complement and enhance the training of today’s workforce to meet the diverse biomedical, behavioral, and clinical research needs across the nation.

Journal of Women’s Health Special Issue Analyzes Mechanisms of Career Enhancement at Specialized Centers of Research Excellence on Sex Differences
A special issue of the Journal of Women's Health (JWH) examines the necessity for robust training and support to strengthen the science and research of sex and gender as it relates to cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, immune, mental health conditions, and addiction. In 2018, ORWH published the Specialized Centers of Research Excellence on Sex Differences request and has since funded 11 centers to conduct “synergistic research” to support and train the future generation of scientists.

Dr. Vivian Ota Wang Joins ORWH as the Deputy Director
Vivian Ota Wang, Ph.D., FACMG, CGC currently serves as the deputy director of the Office of Research on Women’s Health (ORWH). She provides scientific leadership and oversight within ORWH. As a genetic counselor, genomicist, and psychologist, her domestic and global experiences in research, education, science policy, and ethics span the psychological, genomic, nanoscale, and data sciences.
