The Far-Reaching Effects of Promoting and Maintaining Healthy Vision

In August, we observe National Eye Exam Month. This observance is of special importance to me, given my passion for vision health and my experience as an ophthalmologist. The National Eye Institute’s website offers excellent healthy vision resources, such as tips to protect your vision, an eye health trivia quiz, and videos and webinars that teach about healthy vision. The best way to maintain vision health is to get a dilated eye exam on a regular basis to check how clearly you can see, your peripheral or side vision, your eye pressure, and more. Regular eye exams are particularly important because systemic diseases such as hypertension can be diagnosed by checking eye health. Other ways to promote vision health include participating in physical activity; talking about your family eye health history; eating foods that promote vision health, such as spinach, kale, salmon, and tuna; wearing sunglasses when outside; and quitting smoking. Read More

New Report: Perspectives of Advancing NIH Research to Inform and Improve the Health of Women

ORWH recently published the report Perspectives of Advancing NIH Research to Inform and Improve the Health of Women. This report provides background information on the current NIH activities and public health needs related to the three priority topics at last year's women's health conference—maternal morbidity and mortality, chronic debilitating conditions in women, and cervical cancer. It also discusses research gaps related to the health of women and research opportunities at NIH, and it includes a summary of the conference. Learn More

Request for Information on NIH-Wide Strategic Plan for Research on the Health of Women (NOT-OD-22-186)

ORWH recently published a request for information to solicit input from stakeholders across the scientific research, advocacy, and patient communities, as well as the public, to inform the topics that will be included in the forthcoming NIH-Wide Strategic Plan for Research on the Health of Women. Input on the next strategic plan will be accepted through Thursday, September 29. All responses must be submitted electronically here. Send any inquiries to NIHWideSPWH@nih.gov.

Diverse Voices: Intersectionality and the Health of Women
Violence and Women: Trauma and Addiction Impacts on Pregnant/Postpartum Women

ORWH’s quarterly lecture series, “Diverse Voices: Intersectionality and the Health of Women,” amplifies research that incorporates an intersectional framework and addresses the breadth of topics relevant to the health of women. The September 29, 2022, session of “Diverse Voices" will focus on violence and women, including trauma and addiction impacts on pregnant women and postpartum women, as well as centering survivors of gender-based violence, for example, immigrant women, sexual and gender minority women, and female sex workers. This session will feature presentations from Natacha De Genna, Ph.D., of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and Sahnah Lim, Ph.D., M.P.H., M.I.A., of the New York University Grossman School of Medicine.
