Applying for SBIR or STTR funding? Please read this important announcement.

If you already have or are considering applying for NIH Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) or Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) funding, please note the following:

The registration process has changed.

By April, the Dun & Bradstreet Universal Numbering System (DUNS) number will be replaced with a 12-character Unique Entity Identifier (UEI) created in SAM.gov. 

What this means for NEW NIH SBIR & STTR applicants:

• Small business applicants must have a UEI at the time of application submission for the next receipt date on April 5, 2022. 
• Until April 2022, entities must obtain a DUNS number before registering in SAM.gov. During that registration, a UEI will be assigned.

Don’t forget new applicants must complete multiple registrations before preparing an application and applying for funding.

No additional action is required for CURRENT NIH SBIR & STTR awardees. Your UEI was automatically generated and can be found:

• in the Institutional Profile File (IPF).
• populated on Page One of the Notice of Award.
• in both SAM.gov and Grants.gov.

New application forms are in use.

Forms-G are in use for NIH funding opportunities with due dates on or after January 25, 2022, including the upcoming April 5^th receipt date. Review the new application instructions and view this annotated form set.

Key changes in these new forms include updated instructions around Technical and Business Assistance (TABA) requests, commercialization plan, and reporting on prior Phase II awards.

Remember to register and apply long before the due dates. It can take 6 weeks or more to complete the registration process and you may want time to contact a program official with any questions.
