NINR-led Funding Opportunities

  • RFA-NR-24-006: Understanding the Intersection of Social Inequities to Optimize Health and Reduce Health Disparities: The Axes Initiative (R01 Clinical Trial Optional). NINR has published a funding opportunity as part of the Axes Initiative inviting applications that address how social determinants of health (SDOH) influence health at the intersection of social statuses.   • NOT-NR-23-012Notice of Special Interest (NOSI): Addressing Organizational Factors to Prevent or Mitigate Nurse Burnout seeks research studies to develop and evaluate novel organizational interventions to prevent and mitigate nurse burnout which will build new knowledge and the evidence base for implementation in places where nurses practice: in hospitals and clinics, in schools and workplaces, in homes and long-term care facilities, in justice settings, and throughout communities.   • RFA-NR-24-001: Firearm Injury Prevention in Community Healthcare Settings (R01 Clinical Trial Optional) seeks to advance research that reduces firearm injury and disparities through the development and evaluation of firearm injury primary prevention interventions leveraging community healthcare settings. Application Due Date: July 26, 2024

  • Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA) for Undergraduate-Focused Institutions (R15) supports small scale research grants at institutions that do not receive substantial funding from the NIH, with an emphasis on providing biomedical research experiences primarily for undergraduate students, and enhancing the research environment at applicant institutions. First Application Due Date: June 25, 2024

  • NOT-OD-24-079: Notice of Special Interest: Women’s Health Research, in alignment with the White House Initiative on Women’s Health Research, highlights interest in receiving research applications focused on diseases and health conditions that predominantly affect women (e.g., autoimmune diseases; depressive disorders, Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Alzheimer’s disease-related dementias (ADRD), gender-based-violence), present and progress differently in women (e.g., cardiovascular disease; HIV; reproductive aging and its implications), or are female-specific (e.g., uterine fibroids; endometriosis; menopause).   • NOT-OD-24-058: Notice of Special Interest (NOSI): Developing and Testing Multi-level Physical Activity Interventions to Improve Health and Well-Being supports highly innovative multi-level interventions to increase and maintain health-enhancing physical activity in a wide range of population groups, including populations that experience health disparities, children, older adults, and persons at risk for mental/behavioral health conditions, and any subpopulations that can be characterized by the intersection of two or more of these descriptors.   • PAR-23-303: Unveiling Health and Healthcare Disparities in Non-Communicable and Chronic Diseases in Latin America: Setting the Stage for Better Health Outcomes Across the Hemisphere (R01 - Clinical Trials Not Allowed) will support innovative, collaborative, and interdisciplinary research focused on clinical epidemiology, evaluation of public and/or health care policies, and validation of measurements that address health and healthcare disparities related to non-communicable and chronic diseases with the highest disease burden and mortality in Latin America and among U.S. Hispanics/Latinos.   • PAR-24-059: Understanding the Impact of Healthcare System and Clinician Factors on Disparities in Maternal Morbidity and Mortality (R01 - Clinical Trial Optional) will support multidisciplinary and innovative intervention research to understand and address maternal morbidity and mortality in the U.S., particularly but not exclusively among racial and ethnic minority, socioeconomically disadvantaged, and underserved rural populations, with a focus on understudied healthcare factors.   • RFA-AA-24-006Model Continuums of Care Initiative (MCCI) to Advance Health Equity and End Health Disparities Among Women and Girls in Racial/Ethnic Minority and Other Underserved Communities (U34 Clinical Trials Required) supports the planning phase of the Model Continuums of Care Initiative (MCCI) to Advance Health Equity and End Health Disparities Among Women and Girls in Racial/Ethnic Minority Communities. MCCI is a multi-ICO dissemination and implementation science initiative to advance racial equity and end health disparities in racial/ethnic minority women and girls of reproductive age. First Application Due Date: June 18, 2024
  • PAR-24-038: Assessment of Climate at Institutions (ACt) Award (RC2 - Clinical Trial Not Allowed) solicits applications to conduct institutional climate assessments using validated survey instruments and to develop action plans for positive change in the recruitment, hiring, retention, and advancement of faculty, including those from groups underrepresented in biomedical and behavioral research.   • RFA-AG-25-002: Consortium for Palliative Care Research Across the Lifespan (U54 Clinical Trial Optional) invites applications proposing the development of a specialized center, which will provide resources, expertise, and coordination to advance innovative, high-quality research on palliative care for those living with serious illnesses across the lifespan.   • PAR-24-053Multi-sectoral Preventive Interventions that Address Social Determinants of Health in Populations that Experience Health Disparities (UG3/UH3, Clinical Trial Required) supports projects to test prospective multi-sectoral preventive interventions that address social determinants of health in populations that experience health disparities. Application Due Date: August 5, 2024
  • PAR-23-285: Intervention Research to Improve Native American Health (R34 Clinical Trial Optional) will support planning and development, including pilot or feasibility research, to improve health in Native American populations. Proposed research may address health promotion, disease prevention, treatment, recovery, or services research to inform intervention implementation and dissemination. First Application Due Date: October 21, 2024

  • PAR-23-298: Intervention Research to Improve Native American Health (R01 Clinical Trial Optional) will support research on interventions to improve health in Native American populations. This includes 1) etiologic research that will directly inform intervention development or adaptations, 2) research that develops, adapts, or tests interventions for health promotion, prevention, treatment, or recovery, and 3) where a sufficient body of knowledge on intervention efficacy exists, research on dissemination and implementation that develops and tests strategies to overcome barriers to the adoption, integration, scale-up, and sustainability of effective interventions.   • NOT-OD-23-170: NOSI: Research Supplements to Promote Re-Entry, Re-integration into, and Re-training in Health-Related Research Careers (Admin Supp - Clinical Trial Not Allowed) will fund administrative supplements to provide full or part-time mentored research training experiences for individuals with high potential to re-enter, re-integrate into, or re-train in an active research career after an interruption for family responsibilities or other qualifying circumstances as described in the NOSI. NINR accepts administrative supplements on a rolling basis.

Apply to NINR's SDOH Summer Research Institute

NINR invites prospective participants to submit letters of interest for our first SDOH Summer Research Institute, a new event designed to provide early and mid-career investigators the opportunity to learn more about and apply the principles of high-quality SDOH research. Applicant Assistance Program (AAP)

A free, guided 10-week program designed to provide support and guidance to first-time small business applicants. One of the main goals of the AAP is to increase participation in the SBIR and STTR programs by businesses that are owned or controlled by individuals who are traditionally underrepresented in biomedical sciences.
