Addressing Racial and Ethnic Healthcare Disparities Related to Algorithms

Healthcare algorithms—often based on statistical or mathematical models such as machine learning—offer value in diagnostics and treatments. At the same time, their algorithms can create and perpetuate inequities in health care. Register to join us on May 15 for a virtual presentation on draft guiding principles for preventing or mitigating healthcare algorithm-related biases that affect racial and ethnic minority populations that experience health disparities. Meeting attendees will have a chance to provide their thoughts and feedback.

To address the issue, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) hosted a 2-day meeting to present a draft of the AHRQ Evidence Report examining published studies on the topic and to learn about the state of the science and current perspectives from the field in March 2023. This meeting informed a diverse expert panel in the development of a set of guiding principles to prevent or mitigate bias related to healthcare algorithms that affect racial and ethnic disparities. This AHRQ and NIMHD May event will further address the issue and present draft guiding principles.

This event is hosted by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD). AHRQ and NIMHD are working collaboratively with other federal agencies that are part of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), including the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, the HHS Office of Minority Health, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health, and others. NORC at the University of Chicago is supporting AHRQ and NIMHD on this project and serves as the main coordinator and facilitator of all expert panel activities.
