Ethnicity & Disease Publishes “Structural Racism and Discrimination: Impact on Minority Health and Health Disparities”
Most often, research assessing the connection between racism and health focuses on interpersonal discrimination or individual institutions. However, to fully understand the impact of racism and other forms of discrimination, broader societal factors that are linked to poor health outcomes need to be assessed and addressed. Structural racism and discrimination—systems embedded in society that lead to social inequities—create and sustain health disparities by creating environments, policies, practices, and norms that negatively affect health.
The Ethnicity & Disease supplement “Structural Racism and Discrimination: Impact on Minority Health and Health Disparities” includes original research articles that investigate associations between local and societal policies, practices, and laws with health. Topics include the health impacts of inequities in mortgage regulation, wage theft, and intensified immigration enforcement. Commentaries and editorials encourage expanding research, recommend addressing structural racism and discrimination in implementation science, and provide a framework to operationalize structural racism and discrimination research across different racial/ethnic minority groups. The supplement also presents a conceptual model for future research to assess the connection between online racism and health disparities. In addition, authors describe the implementation of interventions in a local health department and a school district.
This NIMHD-sponsored supplement covers a wide range of topics, illuminating the need for a comprehensive approach to address minority health and health disparities. This shift in research and practice will advance efforts to achieve health equity.
