Pediatric Disaster Science Discussion Paper
Agency: NASEM, PTFCEHS
Date: September 22, 2024
Protecting children during disasters requires a tailored approach. A new paper released by the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) delves into the science behind pediatric disaster management and offers concrete priorities for researchers, healthcare professionals, and policymakers. The article, Pediatric Disaster Science: Understanding Needs, Highlighting Imperatives, and Leveraging Opportunities, is a compilation of perspectives, ideas, and discussions shared during the NASEM Symposium on Pediatric Disaster Science, which was held by the Action Collaborative on Disaster Research on August 1-2, 2024 to highlight how research and evidence have the potential to improve outcomes for children at risk of experiencing, or who have experienced, a disaster. The article, published in the National Academy of Medicine Perspectives, proposes the first ever unifying definition for pediatric science and follow-on considerations for the field. Members of the President's Task Force on Environmental Health Risks and Safety Risks to Children (PTFCEHS) Subcommittee on Climate, Emergencies, and Disasters from NIH co-chaired the symposium, and others from agencies including NSF and HHS/ASPR, SAMHSA, and HRSA served on the planning group and provided consultation to the meeting.
