Melatonin is a hormone produced by the brain in response to darkness. It helps with the timing of your body’s internal clock and with sleep.

Melatonin dietary supplements may help with certain conditions, such as jet lag, delayed sleep-wake phase disorder, some sleep disorders in children, and anxiety before and after surgery.

Short-term use of melatonin supplements appears to be safe for most people. Information on the safety of long-term use is lacking. As with all medicines and dietary supplements, melatonin supplements should be stored out of the sight and reach of children.
