Know the Science

Many people take both dietary supplements and prescription or over-the-counter drugs. But some drugs and supplements may interact in harmful ways.

Sometimes, a supplement may decrease a drug’s effects. That means that you aren’t getting the full benefit of the drug. In other instances, a supplement may increase the drug’s effects. That means that the drug’s effects may become too strong, and unwanted side effects may increase.

It’s important to tell all your health care providers about all dietary supplements and drugs you take. That way, they can help you avoid harmful interactions.
