Energy drinks are popular, especially among U.S. teens and young adults. Here are three safety concerns about these products:
-
Energy drinks are high in caffeine. Caffeine use is linked to anxiety, sleep problems, digestive problems, and dehydration. Large amounts of caffeine may cause serious heart and blood vessel problems.
-
Energy drinks contain added sugar. A single 16-oz. container of an energy drink may contain more added sugar than is recommended for an entire day.
-
Combining energy drinks with alcohol is risky. It can make people feel less intoxicated, but their motor coordination and reaction time may be just as impaired as they would have been without caffeine.
