For more than 70 years, May has been observed as Mental Health Month.
Mental health problems are common and burdensome. In the United States, they affect about one in four adults in any given year and nearly half at some time during their lives. Researchers are investigating mind and body practices for a variety of mental health problems.
- Some practices, such as relaxation techniques and music, may help relieve anxiety during stressful situations such as medical procedures.
- There’s some evidence that acupuncture, music therapy, and yoga may help with depression.
- For seasonal affective disorder (SAD), a type of depression that comes and goes with the seasons, light therapy and a specific type of cognitive-behavioral therapy adapted for use with people who have SAD may be helpful.
If you’re considering using a complementary health approach for a mental health condition, it’s a good idea to discuss it with your health care provider.
