NCCIH and other agencies at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have a strong interest in learning about the effects of music on health and disease.

NIH is partnering with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, in association with the National Endowment for the Arts, on the Sound Health initiative, which aims to expand knowledge of the interactions between music and the brain and explore the possible health benefits of listening to, performing, or creating music.

Last year, NIH and the Kennedy Center published a report from a workshop that reviewed the research findings on the effects of music on the brain and made recommendations for future research. Speakers at the workshop focused on emerging evidence that music can benefit people of all ages.

This year, NCCIH and other NIH agencies will fund new research to (1) increase understanding of how music affects the brain, body, and behavior and (2) use that knowledge to develop evidence-based music interventions to enhance health or treat specific diseases or disorders.

That’s music to our ears.
