Many of us associate the aroma of cinnamon with our favorite holiday desserts, but cinnamon is also used for health conditions. It has a long history as a traditional medicine, and some people today use it as a dietary supplement for gastrointestinal problems, loss of appetite, and diabetes, among other conditions.

Short-term use of cinnamon supplements seems to be safe. Research studies haven’t shown any evidence to support using cinnamon as a treatment for any health condition, however. In particular, studies in people with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes have not found cinnamon supplements to be helpful in controlling blood sugar. Cinnamon shouldn’t be used in place of conventional treatment of diabetes.

NCCIH is continuing to support research studies on cinnamon.
