NCCIH Clinical Digest: Use of Natural Products by Children

According to a 2012 national survey, natural products (nonvitamin, nonmineral dietary supplements) are the most frequently used complementary health approach among children. About 5 percent of children in the United States used natural products in 2012. Some of the most commonly used natural products by children were fish oil/omega-3 fatty acids, melatonin, probiotics, echinacea, cranberry, garlic supplements, and ginseng.

Dr. Lanay Mudd

July 18, 2018

Student loan debt is the barrier to beginning and sustaining a biomedical research career most often reported by new investigators. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is working to make this transition easier. In exchange for a commitment to conduct biomedical or behavioral research, NIH will repay up to $70,000 of student loan debt per 2-year contract through the NIH Loan Repayment Programs (LRPs).

NIH Collaboratory Expands Its Portfolio of Pragmatic Clinical Trials

Dr. Catherine Meyers

July 23, 2018

I am pleased to announce five new Pragmatic Clinical Trial (PCT) Demonstration Projects that have been funded within the NIH Health Care Systems Research Collaboratory. The Collaboratory is an NIH Common Fund program, which aims to strengthen the Nation’s capacity to implement cost-effective, large-scale studies that engage health care delivery organizations as research partners. The Collaboratory has launched nine full-scale trials thus far, and its projects have studied a variety of health problems in real-world settings where patients are already receiving care. This approach strengthens the relevance of research results to health practice.
