Is massage therapy helpful for osteoarthritis? We’re highlighting this question today to complete our National Arthritis Awareness Month series.

Although not much research has been done on the topic of massage and arthritis, there are some promising studies. For example, a study funded by our Center found that people with osteoarthritis of the knee who received 1 hour of Swedish massage once a week for 8 weeks had improvements in pain, function, and stiffness.

If you’re interested in massage therapy for arthritis, it’s important to talk to both your doctor and the massage therapist about your joint problems—and any other health conditions you may have—before you start.
