This week, we're featuring acupuncture for arthritis in recognition of National Arthritis
Awareness Month.
Many
studies have looked at the effects of acupuncture on knee pain from
osteoarthritis. Evaluations that looked at all the evidence together have shown
that acupuncture may indeed be helpful. The effects are often modest, and
acupuncture may not be better than sham (fake) acupuncture, but it’s
consistently better than no treatment.
Could
acupuncture also be helpful for rheumatoid arthritis? Unfortunately, we just
don’t know. The small amount of research that’s been done on acupuncture for
rheumatoid arthritis hasn’t produced clear results.
