The American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AI/AN NHPI) Enrichment Initiative, launched in January 2024, addresses health disparities in AI/AN and NHPI communities. By focusing on community-driven, research-based approaches, the initiative seeks to build healthier and more resilient communities.
Celebrating accomplishments from AI/AN NHPI Enrichment Initiative researchers over the past year
Dr. Donald Warne receives Lifetime Achievement Award
Dr. Warne is the principal investigator for the Johns Hopkins University (JHU) Center for Indigenous Health AI/AN NHPI Enrichment Initiative research team. The Association of American Indian Physicians honored Warne in September with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his extraordinary career and enduring contributions to medicine and the AI/AN community.

This July, the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) recognized four articles as winners of its 14th annual John A. Benson, Jr., MD Professionalism Article Prize. The award was created to celebrate and encourage outstanding contributions to the literature on medical professionalism. The AI/AN NHPI Enrichment Initiative JHU team’s principal investigator, Dr. Donald Warne, and community lead, Dr. Allison Kelliher, are authors on one of the award-winning articles, “Recruiting Indigenous Patients into Clinical Trials: A Circle of Trust.”

Dr. Stacy Rasmus featured in an article about building community strengths
The AI/AN NHPI Enrichment Initiative research team at the University of Alaska Fairbanks Center for Alaska Native Health Research (CANHR) is led by one of their principal investigators, Dr. Stacy Rasmus. Rasmus was recently quoted in an article highlighting how CANHR has designed programs to build community strength and provide support and resources to the Alaska Native community.

Dr. Joseph Keawe‘aimoku Kaholokula elected to the National Academy of Medicine
The National Academy of Medicine (NAM) announced the election of new members during its annual meeting last month. Election to the Academy recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service. One of NAM’s newly elected members is Dr. Joseph Keawe‘aimoku Kaholokula, the principal investigator for the AI/AN NHPI Enrichment Initiative research team at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.

Dr. Gary H. Gibbons will receive the Builders of Science Award
Dr. Gary H. Gibbons, National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute director and CEAL co-chair, is being honored with the Builders of Science Award for his groundbreaking work in cardiovascular health for the most affected populations. Gibbons is a leader in community-engaged research and has driven initiatives in data science, women’s health, climate health, and more.

NIH 2026-2030 Minority Health and Health Disparities Strategic Plan Virtual Townhalls
December 4, 1 p.m. ET | More information and registration Community members, health care professionals, researchers, and advocates: please contribute your ideas, concerns, and priorities to help shape the future of NIH’s efforts in minority health and health disparities research at the next virtual townhall! The National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) is launching the development of the 2026-2030 Minority Health and Health Disparities Strategic Plan. NIMHD will collaborate with NIH Institutes and Centers and the NIH Office of the Director and, in consultation with the National Advisory Council on Minority Health and Health Disparities, will produce a plan that sets the direction and goals for minority health and health disparity research for the coming years.
