"My goal is to create a culture of health in the military that promotes healthy eating and weight-management behaviors."
Dietary patterns impact short- and long-term health. Unfortunately, too many of our Service Members have poor nutritional intake and don't meet minimum national dietary recommendations. We are at a crossroads and must make decisions to elevate the role of nutrition in health and readiness, including access to affordable, nutritious, and delicious foods. A supportive food environment is critical to Service Members' food choices and eating behaviors. DoD initiatives such as Go for Green® leverage best practices for improving the availability and accessibility of nutritious foods. The Military Nutrition Environment Assessment Tool (mNEAT) helps professionals provide meaningful data to military decision-makers on the healthfulness of our food environments and opportunities for improvement.
The DoD has many dietitians, nurses, physicians, researchers, and other health-promotion professionals committed to improving our Warfighters' nutritional fitness, and I am honored to be one of them. As a Co-Chair of the Military Nutrition Environment Working Group (MNEWG), I am focused on partnering with subject-matter experts across the Services, DoD, and industry to make the healthy choice the easy and preferred choice. Together with MNE leaders, I work to break down silos and remove barriers so that our Service Members are optimally fueled to fight.
