Help Your TBI Patients Sleep Better
Many studies have confirmed the link between TBI and sleep disturbances, and symptoms often increase with brain injury severity and frequency. TBICoE’s clinical recommendation Management of Sleep Disturbances Following Concussion/mTBI offers comprehensive guidance for primary care in both deployed and non-deployed settings. Topics range from sleep assessment and red flags to diagnosis and management, with overviews of the conditions most often associated with TBI: insomnia (by far the most common), obstructive sleep apnea, circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorders, restless legs syndrome, and parasomnias. Be sure to share the Healthy Sleep and TBI Fact Sheet with your patients, too; along with many tips to improve sleep hygiene, it lists several apps and web resources to promote healthy sleep.

New Findings on Concussion and Abnormal NED Screens
Last month, we announced a new provider resource: the Neuroendocrine Dysfunction (NED) Following Concussion/Mild TBI Provider Fact Sheet, available at health.mil/TBIProviders. Now, a just-released episode of CUBIST—the TBICoE podcast Clinical Updates in Brain Injury Science Today—gives a broader overview of NED risk factors, symptoms, and research findings. Listen as host Don Marion, a neurosurgeon, and Amanda Gano, a physician assistant and TBI subject matter expert, discuss a study published in May 2022 titled “Relation of mild traumatic brain injury history to abnormalities on a preliminary neuroendocrine screen: a multi-center LIMBIC-CENC analysis.”
Find this episode now on DVIDS, SoundCloud, or wherever you listen to podcasts.
