Army Capt. Floyd Baker was a first-year surgical resident at Fitzsimons Army Hospital, Colorado in 1956 when he was told to set up and learn to operate a new piece of equipment: a pump oxygenator. Baker succeeded, thus becoming the first in the Army to use the machine which does the work of both the heart to pump blood and the lungs to oxygenate the blood.
