Advances in trauma care have accelerated over the past decade, spurred by injuries in Afghanistan and Iraq. As the war in Afghanistan ends and individuals leave the military, there is concern that medical experience and knowledge acquired during the conflict may be lost within the military itself.

When I was growing up in a rural area of Mississippi, all the neighborhood children would come over to my great-grandfather’s house during football season to play a pick-up game in his spacious front yard. Every Saturday, we would play from sun up to sun down without ever taking a break. My great-grandfather would always sit on his front porch and watch the group of about 16-20 young men playing as though we were in the Super Bowl. On one particular Saturday, two of the neighborhood children became upset with the direction and flow of the game.
