Forest Death, Wildfires and a Changing Climate
Los Alamos National Laboratory sent this bulletin at 08/05/2014 01:10 PM MDTForest Death, Wildfires and a Changing Climate
As the climate becomes warmer and drier, living with the constant threat of devastating wildfire is becoming a reality for communities across the American West.
To better understand how our changing climate affects, and is affected by, this increase in wildland fire, scientists from Los Alamos National Laboratory are performing research on everything from the “brown carbon” emitted from the burning of biomass, to the processes governing forest mortality and survival. Through their work, we may soon know more about the underlying causes of wildfires, and what can be done to help reduce the frequency and intensity of these catastrophic events.
