CS North Dakota Hosts Brazilian Ethanol Buyer in ND; Brazil Increases Ethanol Quota
The U.S. Commercial Service / North Dakota hosted a Brazilian ethanol buyer for follow-up meetings with ND ethanol producers and a tour of the Tharaldson Ethanol Plant in Casselton, ND in follow up to the August ND Ethanol Trade Mission to Brazil. CS Brazil had previously set up the meetings with 14 Brazilian ethanol buyers during the August 5-8 ND Ethanol Mission to Brazil. The buyer also participated in a dinner for ethanol producers sponsored by the ND Ethanol Council, and a Lunch and Learn hosted by NDSU BioEnergy Economist David Ripplinger, who presented at ND State University about the ND Ethanol Mission to Brazil. Over the same period of the visit, it was announced that Brazil has renewed and increased the size of its tariff-free quota for ethanol imports. The new allotment will last only one year instead of the two years allocated to the former quota that expired on Saturday, according to the country's official gazette. The Brazilian government will allow tariff-free ethanol imports up to a limit of 750 million liters per year, compared to the former quota of 600 million liters annually. Imports beyond the quota are subject to the 20% import tariff. Raising the quota is seen as mainly benefiting the United States, the world's largest ethanol producer and essentially the lone exporter of the biofuel to Brazil. Brazil sugar industry group Unica praised the decision as a step toward market openness and an eventual opening of the United States to more Brazilian sugar. CS North Dakota Helps Double the Number of International Visitors at Big Iron
CS North Dakota was integral in doubling the number of visitors in the Big Iron International Visitors Program from just 50 delegates in 2018 to over 100 delegates from 15 countries in 2019. The CS North Dakota office worked closely with the ND Trade Office to develop more pro-active communication strategies, which were executed by Joshua Erickson from CS North Dakota. CS North Dakota collaborated closely with their counterparts from the US Embassies and Consulates to help identify and screen potential delegates. Erickson sent hundreds of personalized and timely messages and reminders to CS' worldwide network of contacts. Romania, Russia, Ethiopia, Uruguay (seen to the right), and Kenya made a large showing this year. While at Big Iron, the visitors were able to meet one-on-one with North Dakota companies as well as tour dealerships, manufacturing facilities and North Dakotan farms.
