Market Spotlight: Sweden

This month's "Spotlight" focuses on Sweden, includes a market overview, and an upcoming trade event in the market's region.

Market Overview

Sweden Flag

Sweden

Sweden’s healthcare system is one of the best and most well-developed in the world. The population of 10 million enjoys very good health. Sweden spends about 12% of its GDP on health and medical services, which is on par with most other European countries. The  average life expectancy is 81 years for men and 84 years for women. As Sweden has a population that is one of the oldest in the world (19.8% are 65 years or older) there will be an increasing demand for medical equipment and supplies, and longer medical treatments, to meet the health needs of an aging population.

The central government, county councils, and municipalities all share responsibility for health and medical care in Sweden.

There are 100 hospitals in Sweden, of which 85 are run by county councils and the remaining are privately run.

To successfully enter the Swedish market, it is recommended that U.S. firms establish a local presence, either through local agents, distributors, or sales subsidiaries. All products sold in Sweden must carry the CE mark. In addition, all labeling and instruction manuals must be translated into Swedish.

For medical equipment, domestic production is strong (wheelchairs, hospital furniture, sterilizers and blood pressure monitors) and the medical device sector is one of the leading export sectors in Sweden.

In 2006, the Swedish government launched a national strategy for e-health, which emphasizes that information and communication technology will be used as a strategic tool at all levels in the healthcare sector. Today, e-health is an integrated part of the healthcare sector.
