Market Spotlight: Health IT Opportunities in Europe

This month's "Spotlight" focuses on healthcare IT opportunities in Europe, includes a market overview and an upcoming trade event related to the sector.

Market Spotlight: Health IT Opportunities in Europe

Europe is a diverse region that includes large and small, advanced, and transition economies. The EU, when viewed as a single entity, is the United States’ largest trading partner, importing more than $191 billion (over 19%) of all U.S. goods exports in 2017. Annual healthcare spending tops $1.85 trillion (compare to $3.3 trillion in the United States), and medical and pharmaceutical imports from the United States were worth more than $50 billion. The market for health IT solutions in Europe is growing rapidly; though reliable statistics are not available for all markets, the estimated annual compound growth rate is around 15%.

In the next five to ten years, digitization in the European healthcare space will gain speed rapidly.  Specific opportunities will vary significantly between markets, but there are a few general aspects to consider.

First, nearly every country in Europe has or plans to roll out a national public “Electronic Patient/Health Records” system. Second, because the level of digitization in the region is uneven, both within and between European countries, there are significant opportunities in the digitization of hospital records and activities.  U.S. exporters can learn more about specific health IT opportunities in Europe here.

The European market for health IT holds significant opportunities in every subsector for U.S. exporters. Though the market is both diverse and challenging, with the right strategy and sufficient preparation U.S. exporters stand to reap real benefit from an expansion into this region.

For more information about the Health IT opportunities in Europe and other markets around the world, view our 2019 Healthcare Technologies Resource Guide, and contact your local U.S. Commercial Service Healthcare Sector Specialist for assistance.

Signature Event

Ukraine: eHealth Opportunities | Your Computer | December 4, 2018

Webinar

Ukraine’s economy is among the largest in Eastern Europe with significant potential for growth: anticipated 3% GDP growth in 2019-2020.  On January 1, 2018, healthcare reform laws came into force in Ukraine.  This marks the first step of the transformation of the post- Soviet stagnating health system into a Western-style, health insurance-based one.

With the support of international partners, the eHealth Project Office has developed the functionality that was required by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine to initiate the healthcare reform.  The State-Owned Enterprise (SoE) “Electronic Health” was created to further the development and implementation of eHealth. The National Health Service of Ukraine (NHSU), a new central executive body, became functional in April 2018 to manage the financial system of healthcare in Ukraine. The only option to work with NHSU is via the eHealth system.

The webinar will give you an overview of the Ukrainian healthcare market and will highlight:

  • emerging opportunities in the Ukrainian market with the development of healthcare reform,
  • the model, development, and integration of the eHealth System in Ukraine, and
  • emerging opportunities with the development of digital infrastructure in clinics and laboratories.

Join us to hear the following featured speakers:

-  Dan Matsui, PhD, CEO of the State Enterprise Electronic Health

-  Vladyslav Kostyk, Business Development Director of the State Enterprise Electronic Health

-  Oksana Movchan, National Health Service of Ukraine Strategy Advisor
