Market Spotlight: Japan

This month's "Spotlight" focuses on healthcare opportunities in Japan and includes a market overview and an upcoming trade event related to the market.

Market Overview

Japanflag

Japan’s market for medical devices and materials continues to be among the world's largest.  The demand for advanced medical technologies is expected to increase as Japan has a large, middle-class consumer base and a fast-aging demographic profile, with seniors holding increasing expectations for improved quality of life in their later years.

Japan's market for medical devices and materials is valued an estimated $26.4 billion (2017). The market remains heavily dependent on imports, especially sophisticated medical devices such as advanced interventional cardiology products, orthopedic implants, laser surgical equipment, and advanced diagnostic imaging equipment.  Most major U.S. and foreign medical device firms have either a Japan office or a Japanese partner.

Given Japan's aging population and the increasing number of patients with chronic and life-style diseases, medical devices that alleviate pain, complement lost functions, and improve the quality of life should show steady growth in demand.  The markets for in-home care devices, technologies, and health IT-related products are expected to grow as the number of people in out-patient care increases. Due to stronger consumer health concerns, other promising growth areas include self-care and preventive care medical devices and products.

Ukraine: eHealth Opportunities | Your Computer | December 4, 2018

Webinar

Ukraine’s economy is among the largest in Eastern Europe with significant potential for growth: anticipated 3% GDP growth in 2019-2020.  On January 1, 2018, healthcare reform laws came into force in Ukraine.  This marks the first step of the transformation of the post- Soviet stagnating health system into a Western-style, health insurance-based one.

With the support of international partners, the eHealth Project Office has developed the functionality that was required by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine to initiate the healthcare reform.  The State-Owned Enterprise (SoE) “Electronic Health” was created to further the development and implementation of eHealth. The National Health Service of Ukraine (NHSU), a new central executive body, became functional in April 2018 to manage the financial system of healthcare in Ukraine. The only option to work with NHSU is via the eHealth system.

The webinar will give you an overview of the Ukrainian healthcare market and will highlight:

  • emerging opportunities in the Ukrainian market with the development of healthcare reform,
  • the model, development, and integration of the eHealth System in Ukraine, and
  • emerging opportunities with the development of digital infrastructure in clinics and laboratories.

Join us to hear the following featured speakers:

-  Dan Matsui, PhD, CEO of the State Enterprise Electronic Health

-  Vladyslav Kostyk, Business Development Director of the State Enterprise Electronic Health

-  Oksana Movchan, National Health Service of Ukraine Strategy Advisor
