Market Spotlight: Germany
This month's spotlight focuses on healthcare and life science opportunities in Germany, including details about our CEO service at MEDICA.
|
Market Overview
Germany is Europe’s largest market for medical devices and the
world’s third largest behind the United States and Japan, accounting for
roughly EUR 30 billion annually (approximately USD $35 billion).
Germany has a strong healthcare system in terms of
infrastructure, hospital beds, and trained staff as seen in the accompanying
chart.
The German market’s aging population, prevalence of chronic
disease, a sophisticated healthcare system with highly qualified workers, high
healthcare spending, universal healthcare coverage, and facilities turning to
innovative technologies for revenue-generating optional procedures create
opportunities for U.S. technology exports that are innovative, patient-centric
and user-friendly. U.S. medical device exporters hold a 27-30 percent share of the
German import market.
Demand is particularly high for eHealth and
mHealth products; chronic disease treatment; orthopedic and prosthetic products
and minimally invasive technologies; ICU products; medical laser technology;
molecular diagnostics; technical aids; and patient safety and hygiene.
The market is decentralized with the industry spread across the country.
U.S. companies seeking to enter the market are advised to carefully map their
distribution strategy, supply product information in German, and provide
reliable after-sales servicing and product support locally.
Additionally, Germany hosts the world’s largest annual healthcare
trade show, MEDICA (see Featured Event below), and the U.S. Commercial Service
provides services at MEDICA to help U.S. companies connect with global partners
and buyers.
