Webinar - Germany: eHealth Law and Market - Opportunities for U.S. Suppliers

Germany is one of the world largest markets for eHealth. However, adoption in Germany is slower than in other parts of Europe or the U.S., due to legal restrictions and gaps in the digital infrastructure. The German government is now pushing for faster digitization, such as the eHealth law and a defined period to launch nation-wide electronic health records. With the government’s new commitment to advance eHealth, hospitals will have more flexibility to invest. The webinar gives you an overview of the eHealth Act and the digital health policy framework, and provides a look at the business opportunities arising from it in Europe’s biggest market.

    Country Spotlight: Rwanda

    Rwanda Flag

Rwanda is a fast-growing economy with a rapidly expanding middle class. Rwanda’s medium term vision of becoming a middle-income country by 2020 inspired several efforts to improve access to healthcare to all Rwandans which has led to a rapid increase in health insurance subscriptions. The increased access to healthcare in Rwanda resulting from a national health insurance scheme which enables Rwandans to access affordable health care, coupled with improved distribution chains and other healthcare policies has resulted in increased demand for pharmaceutical products.  There is no current production of pharmaceuticals in Rwanda and its healthcare system relies on imports mainly from India, Europe, the United States, Kenya and China. Medical services, products and equipment benefit from full import duties and value added tax exemptions.

India has led exports of medical products to Rwanda followed by Belgium, Kenya, France, and the United States. Imports in medical instruments, appliances and apparatus originate from the United States, China, Germany, and Belgium.

Current demand is dominated by equipment to diagnose and products to treat diseases such as malaria, pneumonia, respiratory infections, gynecological problems, fever and physical trauma. Demand is aligned with the prime causes of morbidity and mortality in Rwanda.

All medical supplies exported to Rwanda have to be on the national list of allowed medicine.

The list of authorized medicine and substances prohibited in cosmetics can be accessed here: http://www.moh.gov.rw/index.php?id=190.

Importing medicine in Rwanda requires an import license and import visa, which are issued by the Rwanda Ministry of Health.

Medical products, equipment, and services are not taxed in Rwanda; there is neither import duty nor VAT tax.
