MorTan Inc. Expands Exports and Helps Preserve Eyesight
in France
MorTan Inc., based in Missoula,
Montana, manufactures and distributes the Morgan Lens which is used to treat
chemical and thermal burns to the eyes, prevent severe eye damage and preserve
eyesight. The firm wanted to expand it sales and contacted the U.S. Commercial
Service (CS) for help finding a distributor in France.
The CS conducted a Gold Key business
matchmaking service for MorTan which involved identifying qualified potential
distributors in France and arranging meetings between them and MorTan. MorTan
President Steve Bixby flew to Paris to meet with CS healthcare specialists and
each of the four distributors. The healthcare market specialist from CS Paris
joined Mr. Bixby in the meetings with distributors, assisted with translation
when needed and provided him with valuable insights on local business
practices.
MorTan attempted to work out a distributorship agreement
with one company, but it never came to fruition. A couple of years later,
MorTan contacted another firm it had met through the CS in Paris and the two
parties are now working together to sell MorTan’s Morgan Lens in France. The
distributor has ordered approximately $2,000 worth of product and is continuing
with promotions. MorTan is expecting more sales in the future.
“I think the two take-away messages are that these things can take time, and
that a Gold Key offers multiple options,” Mr. Bixby said.

Over the last 40 years, Oman has invested heavily in the health sector and succeeded in creating a relatively modern health care system.
The United States entered into a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Oman on January 1, 2009. The FTA has succeeded in eliminating most tariff and non-tariff barriers, with all remaining barriers to be removed by 2018. The FTA allows US investors to wholly own their companies without requiring a local sponsor, although many choose to partner with Omani companies to leverage local expertise and to facilitate business.
According to the Ministry of Health, Oman imports more than 90 per cent of its demand for medicines and surgical supplies.
Barriers
- Tedious and time consuming registration process for new pharmaceutical products
- Price regulation of medicines by the Ministry of Health
- Relatively small population/consumer base
- Bureaucratic obstacles – Omanization, clearances for visas for foreign workers, lack of coordination of investment promotion agencies
- Duties continuing to be charged on American goods transshipped by road via Dubai
- Authenticated certificates of origin/shipping documents are at times still requested by Omani authorities despite not being required under the FTA
