 There are approximately 4.9 million motorized vehicles in Chile and that number is expected to surpass 5 million in 2017. Last year, the sales of new cars increased by a negligible amount per the National Chamber of Automotive Trade (CAVEM), but sales of used cars increased by 14%. The ratio of used car sales to new car sales increased from 2.97 to 3.40 between 2015 and 2016. This fact directly benefits the sales of auto parts for the maintenance of used vehicles. Since there is no significant local production of auto parts, many parts and accessories are imported from trading partners around the world who have access to the Chilean market. Local manufacturing, limited to tires, filters, screws, CV joints, and gearboxes, is approximately 40% and primarily serves the local market.
Due to a free trade agreement that was implemented in 2004 between the U.S. and Chile, duties have been reduced to zero on over 99 percent of U.S. exports to
Chile. In 2016, U.S. auto parts exports to Chile totaled $333.2 million. Approximately a quarter of Chile’s total auto parts imports were from the
United States.

A U.S. automotive parts distributor has achieved continuous export success through using the services of the U.S. Commercial Service and its strategic partners. The International Trade Administration helped the company strategically position itself internationally, find credible foreign buyers, and exponentially expand their network into new markets. Through their years working with ITA, the company has reached 16 new international markets and generated over $2 million dollars in export sales.
Gatekeeper Inc. is a small business in Virginia that develops and manufactures advanced intelligent optical inspection systems for the transportation industry. Gatekeeper utilized the U.S. Commercial Service's Gold Key Service and successfully located a distributor in Chile, expanding their international presence and increasing sales.
“(The) Commercial Service provided the total package required before entering a new market. This included everything from information on the Chilean economy, industrial and government demand for Gatekeeper technologies, available budgets, pre-qualified distributors/partners - in other words the complete starters kit. We are very pleased with the partner we have selected and signed up with as we move to execute a good sized border transaction.”

Albania
Albanian Railways Rehabilitation and Construction (http://www.ebrd.com/work-with-us/procurement/p-pn-171010a.html). Albanian Railways intends using the proceeds of a loan
from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and grants
from the European Union (EU) through the Western Balkans Investment Framework
(WBIF) for the rehabilitation of the existing railway line between Tirana and
Durres with approximate length of 34.17 km and construction of a new rail line approximately 5 km in length to connect with Tirana International Airport
"Mother Theresa" and its interchange with the existing line. The
Project has a total estimated cost of EUR 90.3 million. For more

Costa Rica
The Costa Rican Government will be receiving letters of interest from U.S. companies or U.S. consortiums of companies interested in participating in the future concession process to design, build and manage a new passenger train for metropolitan area of San José, the capital of Costa Rica.The project will include acquisition of new diesel moving equipment (self- propelled vehicles-DMU) and the construction of new stations, tracks, bridges and tunnels. The project will evolve in the future to be an electrical train system. Currently, the National Train Institute is close to receiving a pre-feasibility study, which will include a demand estimation, and is asking for input from interested companies. Government of Ukraine has applied for loan financing from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and European Investment Bank (EIB) for a project to extend a metro (subway) line in the city of Kharkiv. The proposed project, which has a total estimated cost of approximately EUR 382 million equivalent, will require the procurement of the following goods, works and services (contracts): Extension of the existing metro line by 3.5km and construction of 2 metro stations; Construction of new metro wagon depot and connecting rail; Acquisition of new rolling stock; FIDIC Engineer and procurement and implementation support consultant.  Market Report: Automotive Parts
The
2016 Top
Markets Report for Automotive Parts provides U.S. auto parts suppliers with
an assessment of opportunities and challenges, and can be used as a resource to
help suppliers successfully export to various markets. Separate models were developed to rank market opportunities for original
equipment (OE) and for aftermarket parts through 2021. In
November 2017, the Office of Transportation and Machinery’s (OTM) Auto Team
released a supplement to the 2016
Top Markets Report for Automotive Parts. This just-released new
Sector Snapshot provides an insight into the ever-growing automotive specialty
equipment market. The report provides a summary of the specialty
equipment market, market factors impacting foreign demand for U.S. specialty
equipment parts, as well as, ITA’s role in supporting U.S. specialty equipment
companies’ efforts to identify and succeed in new markets. This new
Sector Snapshot can be found here. In 2018, OTM will also update the entire Top Market report with new data and
statistics; updated country reports reflecting changes in markets, regulations,
etc.; and a refreshed, forward-looking “New Technologies” snapshot reflecting
the multitude of technological advances in the automotive industry since the
