Erik Corwin Named Deputy Chief Counsel (Technical)

WASHINGTON —The Internal Revenue Service today announced the selection of Erik Corwin for the position of Deputy Chief Counsel (Technical), effective Aug. 28, 2011.

"I am pleased that Erik is joining the Chief Counsel leadership team,” IRS Chief Counsel William Wilkins said. “His strong technical background, considerable leadership abilities and his substantial experience working with key stakeholders will make him a great asset to the Internal Revenue Service.”

Since 2007, Corwin has served as a partner with Ropes & Gray LLP in Washington, D.C. In this role he focused primarily on federal tax issues related to domestic and international business transactions, regulated investment companies, and bankruptcy and restructuring. Prior to joining Ropes & Gray, he worked on a broad range of tax issues as a partner at Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Door LLP (“WilmerHale”) in Washington, D.C. He also served as a clerk for Judge James Buckley on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit from 1992 to 1993.

Corwin is currently a member of both the District of Columbia and Massachusetts bars. He earned his J.D., magna cum laude, from Harvard Law School in 1992. While at Harvard, he was a member of the Harvard Law Review. Corwin received an A.M. degree in Government from Harvard University in 1988, as well as an A.B., magna cum laude, from Harvard College in 1985.
